The Douglas F3D Skyknight (later designated the F-10) used to be the world's first jet fighter designed for use as a carrier-based night fighter. Its radar equipment required a wider-than-usual fuselage, so it was nicknamed "Willie the Whale."

The U.S. Navy requested Douglas to expand a carrier-based night fighter in 1946. Specifications integrated twin-jet energy, side-by-side seating for a radar operator, a best velocity of 500 mph (805 kph), a struggle radius of 500 miles (805 kilometers), an working altitude of 40,000 ft (12,192 meters) and an break out gadget that allowed the crew to depart downward in the course of the backside of the fuselage.
